| Obverse description | Quartered shield bearing the arms of Grand Master Jean de Vallette: the first and fourth quarters display a gyrfalcon and lion (Vallette family arms), while the second and third quarters bear the eight-pointed cross of the Order of St. John. The shield is the central device in the field, surrounded by the encircling legend. The design is characteristic of the hammered coinage of the Hospitaller Grand Masters of Malta. |
