Reverse description Shield of the Order of Saint John — a plain cross of eight points or a bold cross pattée — surmounted by a crown and enclosed within a beaded border. Four fleurs-de-lis or similar ornamental elements appear in the angles of the cross, consistent with the heraldic arms of the Knights Hospitaller. The surrounding Latin legend invokes the patronage of Saint John the Baptist. The overall design is typical of the hammered silver coinage struck under the Grand Masters of Malta during the seventeenth century.
