Obverse description Broad flat field surrounding a central square perforation, framed by a raised inner rim. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are disposed radially around the square hole, one at each cardinal point, reading clockwise: 開 (top), 寶 (right), 元 (bottom), 平 (left), together forming the reign-era legend 'Kaiping Yuanbao'. The characters are rendered in low, somewhat softly defined relief consistent with a secondary tin cast imitation, and the surfaces show a granular texture throughout.
