Jamul Indian Village, a federally recognized Kumeyaay band located in San Diego County, is one of the smallest tribal nations in California — at times comprising fewer than a dozen enrolled members. Tribal gaming revenue from the Hollywood Casino San Diego, which opened in 2016 after years of legal battles with state and local opponents, provided the economic base that made issues like this one viable. These tribal cents circulate within sovereign jurisdictions and are not redeemable through U.S. federal channels.
