Food stamp scrip of this kind occupied a legal gray zone throughout the mid-twentieth century. Private merchants issued their own fractional paper tokens to avoid making change in coin — a widespread workaround during periods when small denomination coins were either scarce or simply inconvenient for high-volume grocery operations. Adam Herron Groceries of Chowchilla issued this 1-cent piece as part of that tradition, redeemable only at the issuing store and worthless the moment the business closed.
Chowchilla, a small agricultural town in Madera County, had a transient labor economy tied to farming cycles, which gave scrip of this type a real practical function rather than a novelty one.
