The Hyde Park Co-operative Society operated out of Chicago's South Side neighborhood of Hyde Park, adjacent to the University of Chicago, and issued small-denomination paper scrip as an internal exchange medium for member transactions. Co-op scrip of this type was common among American consumer cooperatives through the mid-twentieth century, functioning as a rebate or credit instrument rather than a substitute currency — redeemable against purchases rather than freely circulated.
One-cent denominations are the most perishable of any scrip series and rarely survive in quantity.
