Liberia's 1866 pattern coinage was produced in Philadelphia, the de facto mint for Liberian issues throughout the nineteenth century given the country's lack of its own minting infrastructure. The 1866 patterns came at a moment when the young republic was attempting to formalize its monetary system, though chronic underfunding meant most pattern proposals never advanced to circulation strikes.
KM#Pn12 is one of several copper pattern variants documented from this year, distinguished from the adopted circulation type by die characteristics cataloged in Judd and Pollock's pattern references.
