National Tea Co. acquired Standard Grocery and operated it as a regional division under the Standard Food Stores banner primarily across the Midwest. These cents-denomination paper scrip pieces functioned as change tokens — issued to avoid the perpetual shortage of small coins at the register, a persistent retail problem through much of the mid-twentieth century. Grocery chains across the US experimented with paper fractional currency of this kind; few bothered to preserve it.
Locally printed, almost certainly in small runs for individual store use. Survival rate is low precisely because nobody thought to save a one-cent chit.
