Sunshine Foods was a Chicago-based grocery chain that issued paper scrip as a customer loyalty or trade token instrument — a practice common among American regional retailers through much of the mid-twentieth century, when small-denomination scrip helped keep change circulating efficiently at the register without relying on the chronic coin shortages that periodically plagued retail. These pieces occupied a grey legal area: technically redeemable only at the issuing store, which kept them outside federal currency regulations.

Documentation on Sunshine Foods' scrip program is thin. The printer is unrecorded in standard merchant scrip references.
