Cyprus joined the Exchange Rate Mechanism in 1992, pegging the pound tightly to the ECU as part of a long approach toward EU accession — a process that ultimately concluded with euro adoption on 1 January 2008, rendering this entire cent series obsolete overnight. The coins were demonetized with remarkably little transition friction, partly because the pound had traded so stably for years that Cypriots were already mentally prepared for a fixed conversion.
The KM#53.3 designation distinguishes this from earlier type variants by a revised coat of arms rendering introduced in the early 1990s.
