Obverse description The obverse presents four large Chinese characters — 香, 港, 一, 仙 — arranged in cardinal positions around a small central circular device, together reading 香港一仙 (Hong Kong One Cent). The characters are rendered in bold relief in a brushstroke-influenced style characteristic of mid-Victorian experimental colonial coinage. A small central inset circle contains what appear to be engraver's initials or a minor device. The field is otherwise unadorned, emphasising the bold typographic quality of the Chinese script. The composition is contained within a fine milled rim.
