Additional information

Peru's 1985 coinage marked the introduction of the Inti, a currency created to replace the Sol de Oro at a rate of 1,000 to 1 following years of severe inflation driven by fiscal mismanagement and external debt pressure. The Inti itself would last barely six years before hyperinflation — peaking above 7,000% annually by 1990 — rendered it equally worthless, necessitating yet another replacement with the Inti Millones and eventually the Nuevo Sol in 1991.

The brass céntimo fractional denominations saw almost no practical circulation from the outset; prices had already outpaced them before the coins left the mint.
