This note belongs to a peculiar transitional moment in Brazilian banking history. The Banco do Brasil had been reconstituted in 1905 after years of financial instability following the Encilhamento — the speculative bubble and monetary chaos of the early Republic — and by the 1920s was operating as the government's primary financial instrument without ever having been granted a formal central bank mandate. The "provisional issue" designation reflects an administrative stopgap rather than an emergency: existing printed stock was overprinted or modified to meet denomination requirements while new plates were being prepared at the Casa da Moeda.

The 1 Conto de Réis denomination, equal to 1,000,000 réis, was reserved for high-value transactions. Notes of this size rarely circulated broadly.
