The 1969 Crown was the first coin ever issued by the Turks and Caicos Islands, coinciding with the territory's separation from the Bahamas as a distinct Crown colony. Prior to this issue, the islands had no indigenous coinage at all — the US dollar had circulated informally for decades and continued to do so after 1969, meaning this Crown entered a monetary environment where it had no practical role from the outset.
