Bermuda's 350th anniversary fell in 1959, marking the 1609 wreck of the Sea Venture — a Virginia Company vessel that ran aground on the island during a hurricane, stranding its passengers and inadvertently establishing the first permanent settlement. The survivors, including governor-designate Thomas Gates, spent ten months on the island before building two new ships and sailing on to Jamestown. Those left behind became Bermuda's first colonists.
This crown was struck to a proof-like standard by the Royal Mint, and the issue saw limited distribution outside the island.
