Issued ahead of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, this crown is part of a broader Gibraltar commemorative program that flooded the market throughout the late 1980s and early '90s. Gibraltar's use of the Crown denomination for Olympic-themed issues during this period was largely collector-driven — circulation was never the point. KM#72 is one of several athletic subjects struck to the same specification within the same program year.
