Struck to mark the Queen Mother's 80th birthday, this Gibraltarian issue appeared the same year as the more widely distributed cupro-nickel version — KM#11 — making the silver proof a deliberately limited parallel release aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation. Gibraltar's Government Mint was aggressive in this period about issuing commemorative silver proofs tied to royal milestones, a revenue strategy that became increasingly formulaic through the 1980s.

The Queen Mother turned 80 on August 4, 1980.
