| Reverse description | Central crowned oval shield bearing a rising phoenix amid flames, encircled by the motto EX CINERISVS NASCITVR along the inner border of the shield. The shield is flanked on either side by the crowned royal monogram letters H and M. The circumferential legend DEVS. CAVSA. ATQVE GLADIVS MEVS reads around the upper border, while H L M and L'AN 17 appear in the lower field, referencing the Haitian regnal year. The entire design is enclosed within a fine toothed milled border. |

Henri Christophe ruled the northern Kingdom of Haiti from 1811 until October 1820, when a stroke left him partially paralyzed and a military revolt closed in on his palace at Sans-Souci. He shot himself before the rebels reached him. These essais — pattern strikes rather than circulating issues — were produced in the final year of his reign and almost certainly never saw official authorization for release. Whether they represent an aborted monetary reform or simply a mintmaster's trial is unclear from surviving records.
