| Obverse description | Crude barbarous imitation of a Roman imperial portrait, depicting a stylized rightward-facing bust or head rendered in a distinctly non-classical Germanic hand. The effigy is heavily abstracted, with exaggerated facial features and a schematic rendering of drapery or armor. The surrounding legend, a barbarous degeneration of a Augustan Latin inscription, is rendered in pseudo-Roman lettering and arranged around the dotted border of the coin. The die-cutting reflects the hand of a local Germanic craftsman working from Roman prototypes, resulting in a stylized but recognizable imitation of the Lugdunum denarius type. The field is flat and irregular, consistent with hand-hammered provincial barbarous coinage. |
