Obverse description Central field bears a crowned shield or escutcheon, crudely rendered in hammered relief, surrounded by a circular Latin legend. The legend reads + KAROL.SCD.REX, identifying the issuer as Charles II (Carolus Secundus Rex). The flan is irregular and slightly convex, characteristic of late 13th-century Sicilian hammered copper coinage. The die work is of provincial quality, with uneven letter spacing and shallow relief throughout.
