Bethel, the diaconal institution founded near Bielefeld in 1867, operated its own internal currency for decades — a practical measure to keep money circulating within the community rather than leaking out through the town economy. By 1973, when this note was issued, Bethel housed tens of thousands of residents with epilepsy, psychiatric conditions, and physical disabilities, many of whom had few financial dealings with the outside world. The scrip kept commercial life contained and accountable within the institution's own shops and workshops.
Giesecke & Devrient's involvement gives the note a security specification well above what most private scrip ever received.
