Obverse description Central field bearing a crowned Gothic letter Y, an abbreviation for Yoanes (Latinised form of João), the royal cypher of King João III of Portugal. The crown surmounts the letter in a simple stylised form typical of Portuguese colonial hammered coinage of the early sixteenth century. The surrounding field is plain, with pellet or annular ornaments flanking the cypher as indicated by the lettering. The overall execution is characteristically crude and irregular, consistent with the primitive striking conditions of the Goa colonial mint.
