The diram was reintroduced in 2011 as part of Tajikistan's broader redenomination effort, replacing the somoni-era fractional coins that had largely disappeared from circulation due to inflation eroding their practical value. At one somoni to one hundred dirams, the subdivision was notional for years before the re-issue made small change viable again.
