Qatar and Dubai's monetary union was itself a stopgap — the two sheikhdoms joined the rupee zone replacement scheme after India's 1966 devaluation of the Gulf rupee made continuing that arrangement untenable. The Qatar and Dubai riyal lasted only until 1973, when Qatar went its own way following Dubai's absorption into the UAE and the introduction of separate currencies. This dirham belongs to one of the shortest-lived currency unions in Gulf history.
