Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of King Carlos IV of Spain facing right, occupying the central field. A prominent fleur-de-lys counterstamp applied by the Puerto Rican colonial authorities is visible on the king's portrait. The circular legend reads CAROLUS·IIII·DEI·GRATIA around the periphery, with the mint date 1797 in the exergue. The coin features a toothed border and displays considerable wear consistent with prolonged circulation.

Reverse description Crowned Spanish royal arms at centre, quartered with castles and lions and bearing a central escutcheon with the Bourbon fleur-de-lys, flanked by the Pillars of Hercules with scrolling banners. A fleur-de-lys counterstamp is also visible on the reverse field. The peripheral legend reads ·HISPAN·ET IND·REX·Mo·8R·F·M·, identifying the denomination as 8 Reales struck at the Mexico City Mint with assayers' initials F and M. The whole is enclosed within a toothed border.
