| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust of Liberty in high relief, wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and adorned with wheat ears and cotton blossoms in her flowing hair. The legend E·PLURIBUS·UNUM arcs along the upper periphery, with the date 1880 centered in the lower exergue. Eight stars are arranged to the left and seven to the right of the bust along the inner border, framed by a beaded denticle rim. A small punch hole is visible near the upper right of the field, characteristic of host coins used for Puerto Rico countermarking. The design is the classic Morgan dollar type, engraved by George T. Morgan after the model of Anna Willess Williams. |
