| Obverse description | The coat of arms of Sierra Leone occupies the central field, depicting a shield supported by two lions rampant, flanked by palm trees, with a crowned lion passant at the shield's crest and a scroll bearing the national motto below. The circular legend REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE arcs along the upper periphery, with the motto UNITY FREEDOM JUSTICE implied within the arms device. The date 1997 appears in the lower field beneath the shield. A fine beaded border runs along the inner rim. |

| Additional information |
Issued within weeks of Diana's death in August 1997, this coin was part of a flood of commemorative issues from small-circulation Commonwealth mints that had no meaningful connection to the Princess of Wales but could legally produce legal-tender pieces bearing her likeness. Sierra Leone was itself in the grip of a brutal civil war that year — the RUF's campaign had displaced hundreds of thousands — making the coin's production an almost entirely export-driven exercise aimed at the international collector market rather than domestic circulation.
