Trinidad and Tobago gained independence in 1962 but retained British coinage infrastructure for years afterward. The 1970 date carries particular weight: that February, the country was shaken by the Black Power movement, a prolonged uprising that shook the Williams government and eventually triggered a state of emergency in April. The Central Bank had only been established in 1964, and this dollar series represented an early assertion of independent monetary administration for a nation still finding its footing.
The nickel composition replaced an earlier cupro-nickel alloy — hence the KM#7a designation distinguishing it from its predecessor.
