| Reverse description | A hawksbill turtle is depicted in central relief, swimming rightward amid stylised ocean waves that fill the field. The issuer name TUVALU appears in the upper legend, with the date placed immediately below it, while the denomination ONE DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower periphery. The design is the work of engraver John Donald and reflects Tuvalu's strong cultural and ecological connection to marine life. |

| Additional information |
Tuvalu's dollar coinage was introduced in 1976, the year the islands gained independence from Britain as a separate territory — splitting administratively from the Gilbert Islands, which became Kiribati in 1979. The Franklin Mint struck the inaugural issues, and the series was designed with a deliberate emphasis on local marine fauna, a calculated decision to distinguish Tuvaluan coinage from the generic colonial issues that had preceded it.
