Additional information

Fiji's trimetallic dollar was introduced as part of a broader currency reform driven by the Reserve Bank of Fiji's effort to rationalize the island nation's coin series following the 2006 military coup led by Frank Bainimarama. The political instability of that period complicated normal monetary administration for years afterward, making the precise timing and logistics of new coin introductions during 2009–2011 unusually fraught.

The Pretoria Mint struck this issue — South Africa's facility having long served Pacific and African nations lacking their own minting infrastructure.
