Liberia's early 2000s "European Currency" series was a cottage industry in itself — produced almost entirely for the collector market by private minting interests operating under licensing arrangements with the Liberian government, which had little meaningful oversight of the program. Spain's peseta was abolished on 28 February 2002 when euro coins and notes became the sole legal tender, ending a currency whose name derived from the Arabic word for weight used by medieval traders across the Iberian peninsula.
