| Obverse description | Central circular field depicts a coastal scene featuring a traditional dhow beached on shore, a standing camel to the left, and a palm tree in the background, with seabirds in flight above. The date 1996 appears in the exergue within the central circle. The legend ERITREA curves along the upper periphery in Latin script, flanked by decorative stars. The Tigrinya inscription in Ge'ez script appears along the left border and the Arabic inscription along the right border, both reading 'Eritrea', separated by five-pointed stars. A beaded border frames the entire design. |

Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after a thirty-year armed struggle, and the Bank of Eritrea was established almost immediately to assert financial independence from the Ethiopian birr. This dollar series, issued three years into statehood, was among the first nationally identified coinage the country produced — struck not domestically but almost certainly abroad, as Eritrea had no mint of its own.
The lanner falcon breeds in the Horn of Africa and was a deliberate choice for a young nation selecting fauna with genuine regional presence rather than borrowed symbolism.
