Reverse description A vibrant full-color underwater scene is applied to the central field, framed by a sinuous ribbon device that divides the composition into upper and lower registers. The dominant subject is a large Lionfish (Pterois sp.) rendered in striking red, orange, and green with elaborate fan-like pectoral fins, positioned at center. To its left, a bright yellow fish is depicted among multicolored coral formations including branching and staghorn varieties. A green Parrotfish swims freely in the upper blue-water register above the ribbon. The legend 'MARINE - LIFE PROTECTION' curves along the upper rim within a beaded border.

Additional information

Palau began issuing dollar coins under a licensing arrangement with the U.S. shortly after independence in 1994, producing a steady stream of colorful marine-themed pieces aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation. Most were struck by foreign mints on contract and never saw a cash register on the islands.

KM#43 is one of several issues from this period sharing the same copper-nickel specification, produced as the series reached peak output around the turn of the millennium.
