| Reverse description | Central cross pattée, elaborately ornamented at its terminals with fleurs-de-lis and decorative flourishes, occupying the full field within a beaded inner border. The four angles of the cross are filled with heraldic devices including lozenges and floral ornaments associated with the Grimaldi arms. The date appears within the legend, which reads DEO. IVVANTE. ET. PROTEGENTE. 1649 — meaning 'With God's help and protection' — disposed around the periphery in Latin capitals. The composition follows the conventional doppia format of northern Italian and south-French principality gold coinage of the period. |
