Breslau operated under a complex dual authority during these decades — nominally under Habsburg rule following Ferdinand I's acquisition of Bohemia and Silesia in 1526, yet the city retained substantial municipal minting privileges that it exercised with considerable independence. The right to strike gold ducats was jealously guarded by the city council, and Breslau's issues from this period circulated extensively in the Silesian trade networks connecting the Baltic to the Adriatic.
