Obverse description Central field features the Portuguese colonial coat of arms superimposed on an armillary sphere, the latter rendered with meridian and equatorial bands. The shield displays the traditional Portuguese quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) on the dexter and a caravel under sail on the sinister, below which undulating waves fill the base of the shield. Above the arms, a mural crown composed of five visible towers surmounts the composition. The colonial territory name CABO VERDE arcs along the upper periphery in bold raised Latin lettering, with two small rosette ornaments flanking the lower field. The date 1953 is inscribed along the lower rim. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border.
