Cape Verde's FAO coinage was issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's global "Food for All" campaign, which prompted dozens of newly independent nations to mint thematic low-denomination coins during the 1970s. Cape Verde had declared independence from Portugal only in July 1975, making this among the earliest coinage issued under the new republic's own banking authority.
The FAO series gave the fledgling Banco de Cabo Verde a practical excuse to mint circulating coinage quickly, with an internationally recognized thematic justification behind it.
