| Obverse description | The obverse features a faithful reproduction of the celebrated Athenian tetradrachm of circa 490 BC, depicting a right-facing owl standing erect with an olive sprig and crescent moon to the upper left, all rendered within the inner copper-nickel clad nickel disc. The face value '1 ΕΥΡΩ' appears in the field alongside the engraver's initials 'ΓΣ' (Geórgios Stamatópoulos) and the year of issue. The design is encircled by the twelve stars of the European Union arranged along the outer nickel brass ring, symbolising European unity. The inscriptions are rendered in the Greek script, maintaining the Hellenic character of the national side. |
