Reverse description Central field depicts the mythological scene of the Abduction of Europa, showing a female figure seated upon the back of a bull in dynamic composition. The numeral '1' appears prominently in the field as the denomination. The legend 'EUROPA-EUROPE' is inscribed in a curved arrangement, framing the design. The imagery references the classical Greek myth in which Zeus, transformed into a bull, carries Europa across the sea. The design is executed in a neoclassical style consistent with European commemorative coinage traditions.

Additional information

Luxembourg's euro coinage occasionally ventures into collector territory with issues like this one, where selective rhodium plating is used to differentiate architectural detail from the surrounding gold field — a technique more common in medallic work than circulating coinage. Vianden Castle, perched above the Our river valley in the north of the country, was largely in ruins through the nineteenth century before Victor Hugo took up residence in the town during his exile from France and famously sketched the structure repeatedly.

Hugo's advocacy helped spur restoration interest, though serious reconstruction didn't begin until the 1970s.
