| Obverse description | Within the inner circle, an armoured crowned bust of Grand Duke Vytautas the Great faces right, holding an upright sword. The outer ring bears the national name and a legend identifying the ruler and his reign dates, flanked by six stars to the left and six stars to the right. The composition presents a heraldic, medieval character consistent with Lithuanian historical iconography. All legends are rendered in Latin script. |

Lithuania applied for EU membership in 2000 and was formally invited to join in 2002, with accession following in May 2004. That same year, the Bank of Lithuania commissioned trial euro pieces across all denominations — these probe/essai strikes were produced to test dies, planchet tolerances, and vending machine compatibility well before the country's actual euro adoption, which was repeatedly delayed and did not occur until January 2015, a full eleven years after this piece was struck.
