Bahrain's first decimal coinage series was introduced in 1965 under Emir Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, replacing the Gulf rupee that had circulated across the region as an Indian colonial monetary instrument. The Gulf rupee's abrupt withdrawal in 1966 — triggered by India's devaluation pressures and Britain's desire to sever sterling-area ties in the Gulf — gave this short two-year window its hard close, making 1966-dated pieces the final issue before the Bahraini dinar system fully consolidated.
