Reverse description A large cross with arms decorated with rows of pellets or beads occupies the centre of the field, dividing it into four quarters. The abbreviated acclamation IC XC / NI KA (Jesus Christ conquers) is distributed one letter pair per quarter. The cross form closely imitates that found on anonymous Byzantine folles of Classes A2 through I, adapted by Norman die-cutters with characteristically coarser execution. The flan is irregular and the die work is bold but unrefined, consistent with hammered South Italian coinage of the third quarter of the eleventh century.
