Obverse description Printed in brown and ochre on cream paper, the obverse is framed by an ornate guilloche border with letter 'R' monograms at each corner and intertwined 'RF' cipher underprints to the left and right. A central vignette at the top centre contains the city arms of Nantes — a sailing ship at sea — enclosed within a circular legend, flanked by two spread-winged herons perched on laurel branches. The denomination 'BON DE UN FRANC' is printed in large bold letterpress across the centre, with a pale '1 Fr' underprint behind it, below the issuer name 'CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE NANTES'. Two manuscript signature lines for the Chef de la Comptabilité and the Président appear in the lower portion, with the series letter and serial number printed in a cartouche at the bottom, above the printer's imprint.

French Chambers of Commerce were authorized to issue small-denomination emergency notes in August 1914, as the mobilization for war drained coins from circulation almost overnight. The Nantes chamber was among the earliest to act, and the Imprimerie Moderne — a local Nantes firm operating under Beuchet & Vanden Brugge — handled production entirely in-house, which kept the notes genuinely regional in character. The JP#88 series ran across multiple dated issues, accounting for the breadth of that reference range.
