Additional information

Monaco issued no coinage during the Italian and German occupations of 1940–1943, leaving the principality dependent on French currency. This aluminium franc was finally authorized under Louis II in 1943 — the same aluminium alloy France itself had been forced to adopt after nickel and copper were requisitioned for the German war machine. The wartime metal shortage, not any domestic monetary policy, dictated the composition.

Struck at Paris, the issue carries a mintage of just 500,000 — modest even for a microstate.
