Reverse description Central device consists of the Royal Cambodian coat of arms: a circular shield enclosing a tiered ceremonial urn or altar flanked by olive branches, surmounted by a multi-tiered stupa from which rays of glory radiate outward. The arms are supported on either side by serpentine naga figures. Khmer script legend surrounds the central device in the upper and lateral fields, giving the full royal title of King Norodom I. The denomination UN FRANC appears in the lower field in bold Latin letters, flanked by decorative dots. A beaded border encircles the entire design.

Additional information

The 1860 Cambodian franc issues occupy a peculiar corner of colonial numismatics: they were produced under French pressure during the final years before the Protectorate was formally established in 1863, part of an effort to introduce a Western monetary framework to a kingdom still operating under traditional exchange systems. Norodom I had only recently consolidated his contested claim to the throne — his accession itself required French and Spanish military intervention in 1860 to suppress a rival faction.

The X# prefix in Krause indicates this piece is catalogued among patterns and essais rather than circulating issues, meaning it almost certainly never reached general use.
