Reverse description A bold, plain bust of a male figure facing slightly left, rendered in high relief with a naturalistic, sculptural style characteristic of Belgian medallists of the mid-twentieth century. The portrait, attributed to the engraver Carlos van Dionant (CVD), occupies the majority of the field. The circular legend BANQUE · NATIONALE · DU · RWANDA runs around the upper periphery, while the date · 1964 · is inscribed along the lower rim. The word ESSAI appears discreetly in the right field beside the portrait, confirming the trial status of this piece.

Additional information

Rwanda's first coinage program was developed in 1964, shortly after independence from Belgian administration. The Banque Nationale du Rwanda commissioned pattern strikes in multiple compositions before settling on the circulating specification — this bronze example was among the rejected candidates. Pattern pieces from this series rarely surface, as institutional trial strikings of newly independent African states were typically retained by mints or destroyed rather than released.
