Piedforts — coins struck on blanks two or more times the standard thickness — have been produced at the Monnaie de Paris since at least the medieval period, originally as presentation pieces for assayers and treasury officials to verify weight standards. The 1948 aluminium example is unusual: postwar France had only recently abandoned copper and nickel for aluminium in everyday coinage due to wartime metal shortages, and producing a piedfort in that same base metal underscores the essentially archival rather than precious function of this particular piece.
