Pieforts are struck at double or greater thickness than the circulation issue, produced by the Paris Mint for presentation and archival purposes rather than distribution. The 1948 French West Africa franc essais were part of a systematic coinage reform for the territories following the 1945 reorganization of the French Union, which restructured colonial monetary arrangements under the new Fourth Republic. Very few piefort essais from this program entered private hands; most went to the Monnaie de Paris archives or French treasury officials overseeing the transition.
KM#PE1 designation confirms this is the first — and only recorded — piefort variety for this type.
