Nikola III Zrinski struck this issue at Gvozdansko in 1527, the same year the Croatian nobility was negotiating its position between two rival claimants to the Hungarian throne — Habsburg Ferdinand I and the Ottoman-backed János Szapolyai. The Zrinski family, entrenched defenders of the Croatian frontier against Ottoman expansion, were among the most powerful magnates to back Ferdinand, a decision that shaped the dynasty's trajectory for generations.
Private minting by Croatian magnates of this period is exceptionally rare in the documentary record, making Gvozdansko-struck pieces among the most historically loaded coins to survive from the post-Mohács collapse of the medieval Hungarian kingdom.
