| Obverse description | Right-facing bearded bust of Emperor Menelik II, wearing a traditional Ethiopian crown (qob'e) adorned with horizontal bands and decorative elements, with cloth ties falling behind the neck and a beaded collar visible at the truncation. The portrait is rendered in high relief in a naturalistic style by engraver Lagrange, whose name appears incuse in the lower exergue. A circular Ge'ez legend surrounds the effigy, reading the imperial titulature, with the engraver's name LA GRANGE inscribed along the lower border. The coin features a toothed border encircling the entire design. |

| Reverse description | Central field displays the denomination in two lines of Ge'ez script within a beaded inner circle: the numeral ፩ (one) above ግርሸ (Gersh). The surrounding legend in Ge'ez reads the imperial motto referring to the Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, flanked by cross ornaments. Below the inner circle, the Paris mint mark 'A' appears between two cross ornaments, and the Ethiopian calendar date ፲፰፻፹፰ (EE 1888, equivalent to AD 1896) is inscribed along the lower rim. A toothed border frames the entire reverse design. |
